Kristin McMillan, the top executive at Southern Nevada’s primary telecommunications company, CenturyLink, has been named president and CEO of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber announced the appointment today and said McMillan would begin her new role on May 2. She succeeds Matt Crosson, who died Dec. 24.

McMillan was the chairwoman of the chamber’s Board of Trustees in 2010 and was a leader in the team that recruited Crosson from New York last year.

A lawyer, she has been active in the business community of Southern Nevada for more than 20 years working as the managing shareholder for the Hale Lane law firm in Las Vegas and as co-managing shareholder of the Las Vegas office of Greenberg Traurig. As an attorney, she built her practice on regulatory issues including telecommunications, energy and transportation.

McMillan has been with CenturyLink and its predecessor companies since 2006 and served as vice president of external relations for CenturyLink’s 10-state western region. She also had a role in the regulatory approval process for the merger between CenturyLink and Qwest, which resulted in the creation of the third-largest telecommunications company in the U.S.

“Kristin McMillan brings a unique combination of business acumen, strategic planning and government and community relations, as well as a keen understanding about the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce,” said Michael Bonner, 2011 chairman of the chamber’s board of trustees.

“She skillfully led the chamber through the transition in leadership last year and through that experience gained tremendous insight regarding the needs of our membership and the important role the chamber continues to play in moving our economy forward,” Bonner said in a release announcing the appointment.

“I am honored and excited to serve as president and CEO of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce,” McMillan said in a chamber statement. “As we begin to move our economy forward, the chamber has an important role to play in providing relevant programs and services to help businesses grow and prosper, as well as being a strong voice for Nevada businesses in advocating for policies that will spur job creation and economic growth. I look forward to working with our members, lawmakers and other community partners to promote our shared interests of rebuilding and reinventing Las Vegas.”
