There are dozens of coveted awards that Las Vegas hotels strive to achieve — the AAA Five Diamond, Forbes’ Five Star award and Condé Nast Traveler’s Hot List, to name a few.

And then there’s an award for the best public restroom, which one downtown Las Vegas hotel could soon add to its shortlist of accolades.

Main Street Station’s men’s room is one of 10 finalists in the America’s Best Public Restroom contest, presented by Cincinnati-based Cintas Corp.

At first glance, the Main Street Station restroom might seem like any other dingy downtown Las Vegas men’s room, except that the graffitied wall behind the row of urinals is a piece of the Berlin Wall. What was once a symbol for post-World War II communism is now a target for the occasional intoxicated downtown patron.

Other contenders for this year’s American’s Best Restroom award include the Castello di Amorosa Winery (Calistoga, Calif.), Don’s Johns Presidential Luxury Restroom Trailer, the Field Museum (Chicago), the Joule Poule at the Joule Hotel (Dallas), Ninja New York (New York), the Renaissance Arlington (Crystal City, Va.), the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and the Snowbasin Ski Resort (Huntsville, Utah).

Fans can vote for their favorite spot online at www.bestrestrooms.com. Winners will be announced Sept. 19.

The Main Street men’s room would be the first to pick up the restroom award, although other Las Vegas loos, including the restroom at Mix and Zeffirino at the Venetian, have been past nominees.

Make Las Vegas proud, Main Street.
