Sale of 2 Las Vegas psychiatric hospitals proposed

A Tennessee company plans to buy two Las Vegas psychiatric hospitals.

Strategic Behavioral Health LLC of Memphis would purchase Montevista Hospital and Red Rock Behavioral Health Hospital for an undisclosed amount under an arrangement disclosed by the Federal Trade Commission last week.

Sale of the hospitals was required by the FTC for competitive reasons after Universal Health Services Inc., which already has two Las Vegas-area psychiatric hospitals, agreed last year to buy the owner of Montevista Hospital with 160 beds and Red Rock Behavioral Health Hospital with 41 beds.

“Universal Health Services contends that Strategic Behavioral Health has the financial, professional, and operational resources to be a strong and effective competitive force in the Las market for the provision of acute inpatient psychiatric services,” the FTC said in a statement in which it’s seeking public comment on the proposed deal.

Pennsylvania-based Universal Health Services is best known in Las Vegas for its Valley Health System consisting of Centennial Hills, Desert Springs, Spring Valley, Summerlin and Valley hospitals.

The existing Universal Health Services behavioral care hospitals in Las Vegas are Spring Mountain Sahara with 60 beds and Spring Mountain Treatment Center with 164 beds.
