Wanted: 200 new taxicab drivers

A Las Vegas cab company wants to hire up to 200 new employees, a move some industry leaders see as a sign that tourism is on the upswing.

Frias Transportation Management, which owns five taxi companies, is hosting a job fair next week to gather applications from potential workers. The event runs 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at 5110 S. Valley View Blvd., near Tropicana Avenue.

The company is recruiting dozens of drivers to fill weekend shifts beginning this month, as well as support staff including mechanics, smog technicians and administrators. Owners said they plan to hire close to 200 new drivers by February.

“We’ve reported steady increases across all five cab companies, and that’s promising for the local economy,” CEO John Hickman said.

Frias Transportation operates a fleet of almost 1,000 vehicles through Ace Cab, Union Cab, ANLV Cab, Vegas-Western Cab, Virgin Valley Cab, Las Vegas Limousines and Airline Limousine companies.

A recent decision by the Taxicab Authority set the stage for the hirings. In a well-attended seven-hour hearing, the five-member authority board approved six additional cabs per company. The board also allowed companies to use “weekend medallions” for longer periods. One medallion is assigned to each car and can restrict taxis to certain geographical areas or time frames.

People applying for driver positions must be at least 21 years old and have a valid Nevada driver’s license, Department of Transportation physical examination document and Department of Motor Vehicles three-year driving history. Application forms are available here.
