NV Energy, MGM Resorts honored for diversity efforts

MGM Resorts International and NV Energy are two of the nation's 55 “2012 Best Companies for Diversity,” as selected by HispanicBusiness Media.

HispanicBusiness, a publisher serving Hispanic professionals and entrepreneurs, ranked MGM Resorts at No. 26 and NV Energy at No. 46. Topping the list is PG&E Corp., the big utility company in California.

MGM Resorts and NV Energy are among the Las Vegas companies known for promoting diversity in hiring, employee advancement and contracting.

MGM Resorts was praised for its commitment to Hispanic hiring, promotion, marketing, philanthropy and supplier diversity; and is the only gaming company on the list.

“On behalf of our 62,000 employees, it is an honor to be recognized by HispanicBusiness Media as a national leader in diversity,” MGM Resorts Chairman and CEO Jim Murren said in a statement. “We consider the inclusion of Hispanic employees in our workforce and Hispanic-owned businesses in our company commerce a priority as a leading company, but also important from a diversity standpoint as it brings substantial benefits by helping us better serve the needs of customers of various backgrounds.”

NV Energy received its highest marks in the ranking for marketing and community outreach.

"Our commitment to diversity is an important part of our culture, and plays a key role in our strategy to connect with our employees and our customers. I'm proud of the recognition given to NV Energy by HispanicBusiness magazine in this key area, and honored to be in the company of the other businesses also recognized for best-practices in diversity," CEO Michael Yackira said in a statement.

Separately, MGM Resorts announced another community achievement. It's working with the American Red Cross on a "Boots to Business'' program to help veterans in Las Vegas transition from military service into management positions at its properties and nine vets have completed the program.
