Allegiant Air adding flights between Las Vegas and Plattsburgh, N.Y.

An Allegiant Air jet takes off from McCarran International Airport on Friday, Aug. 26, 2011.

Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air will tap a new Canadian border market later this year with nonstop flights between McCarran International Airport and Plattsburgh, N.Y.

The airline will use the newest additions to its fleet — 225-passenger twin-engine Boeing 757 jets — to fly the route twice a week.

It’s Allegiant’s first long-haul use of the plane outside of its West Coast-to-Hawaii service introduced earlier this year. The airline experimented with a few other domestic routes while awaiting the planes to be certified for flights over water.

The company is looking to build a market between Montreal and Las Vegas. Plattsburgh is about an hour south of Montreal by car, and Allegiant has prospered in markets along the Canadian border, most notably in Bellingham, Wash., near Vancouver, British Columbia.

“Las Vegas has been the most requested destination from the beginning, and we know this operation will be another success for both Allegiant and Plattsburgh,” said Garry Douglas, president of the North Country Chamber of Commerce, which serves as the marketing and development agency for Plattsburgh International Airport.

The service also is envisioned as a commuter flight for Cirque du Soleil employees based in Montreal who work in Las Vegas shows.

Service begins Dec. 19, and flights are scheduled at 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Sundays from Las Vegas and at 9:30 a.m. Thursdays and Mondays from Plattsburgh to McCarran.

Allegiant is introducing the route with $150 one-way tickets.
