Southwest Airlines adds Las Vegas-Des Moines flights

Southwest Airlines, the busiest commercial air carrier at McCarran International Airport, added its 58th destination to and from Las Vegas on Sunday with some Vegas flair — showgirls escorted passengers aboard their flight from Des Moines, Iowa.

Southwest inaugurated service at Des Moines International Airport a year ago with daily trips to and from Chicago’s Midway Airport, which was a connecting point for Southwest customers flying from Des Moines to Las Vegas.

The new, three-hour nonstop flights leave McCarran at 12:25 p.m., arriving at Des Moines at 5:20 p.m. Return flights leave Des Moines at 11:55 a.m., arriving in Las Vegas at 1:05 p.m.

Passengers flying Sunday left from a gate adorned with Las Vegas decorations, and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority gave away Las Vegas pins.

Southwest will compete on the route with Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air, which offers four flights a week to and from Des Moines.
