Openings and closings: One casino opens, another says goodbye

A view of the new O’Sheas is shown from the Linq during a tour Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2013. The sign is the original sign from the old location.

A Las Vegas favorite returns, a suburban bar closes and a longtime casino shuts its doors, while the Flamingo welcomes a new spot for sweet indulgences for both kids and adults.

    • Republic Kitchen

Republic Kitchen, 9470 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, closed late last month.

Owner Jeff Kovatch said he wanted to focus on operating his Greens & Proteins restaurant chain and plans to open a third location soon.

Taco Taco is expected to take over the Republic Kitchen space.

    • Big Dog’s Café & Casino

Big Dog’s Brewing Company, 6390 W. Sahara Ave., Las Vegas, closed in late December.

There was no word as to why, and CFO Robert Snyder was unavailable for comment.

The company's Draft House Barn & Casino at 4543 N. Rancho Drive remains open.

    • O’Sheas

O’Sheas inside the Quad returned to the Strip on Dec. 27 after more than a year and a half of renovations.

The casino brings backs many of its old favorites, including signature slot machines, cheap table games and six beer pong tables. The 5,000-square-foot space also includes three bars — Lucky Bar, Dublin Up Bar and the Blarney Bar outside.

The casino is open 24 hours.

Purple Zebra, a candy and daiquiri shop, opened Dec. 27 in the Flamingo.

Customers can choose from 38 novelty cups, sized from 16 ounces to 100 ounces, then fill them with their choice of slushy drink, alcoholic or non-alcoholic. The shop also sells a wide selection of candy.

A purple zebra head adorns the 4,400-square-foot space.

Purple Zebra is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

The mysterious social club inside the Cosmopolitan welcomed its first guests on New Year’s Eve.

But nobody is saying much about what to expect. Cosmopolitan CEO John Unwin says he'd rather have people experience the social club than read or hear about it.

What is known is that the club serves dinner starting at 6 p.m., while “Vegas Nocturne,” a three-segment show, plays at 8 p.m., 10 p.m. and midnight. Show tickets are sold separately from dinner, and the club is limited to people 21 and older.

A grand opening is planned for the Jan. 17-18 weekend.
