MEET: BOOKSORBOOKS:

Bookstore owner is easy to read: She wants books in kids’ hands

Kim Henry opened BooksOrBooks this year. She placed a cart in the front of the store where young readers can take a book free of charge.

Describe your business.

We sell mostly used books with a selection of new books for children. We offer books in most all genres, specializing in children’s vintage literature. We carry first editions, scarce out-of-print books and books for reading. We strongly support literacy and putting books into the hands of every child. We have a cart in the front of our store where we give books away to young readers. We also have a cart of nice books for “older” readers that we sell for a very low price. We support local authors and host reading groups and events. We also support local artists by displaying their works. We have a piano in our children’s area and encourage customers to play.

Book lovers, readers and book collectors. People who like used bookstores and appreciate browsing for that book they didn’t know they needed until they picked it up. We also help customers find books through our connections with other used bookstores, and if the book a customer needs isn’t available locally, we find it online.

What is your business philosophy?

We love books and people who love books as much as we do. Reading is an experience, and everyone should experience reading.

What makes your business unique?

We believe a visit to the bookstore should be an experience. We encourage customers to browse and enjoy our selection. We are continually working to keep our inventory fresh and interesting.

What’s the most important part of your job?

Selecting the right books, building my bookstore and sharing my love of books and reading with all our customers. I love working with young people and have had several young “interns” work with me in the store on book projects. I want to make sure that my love of books and reading passes on to the next generation.

What are some of the considerations of operating a books business in a digital age?

We sell online and have our own website that allows us to offer more books to our customers. We sell physical books but support reading on electronic devices and listening to audio books — I do all three myself.

What is the best part about doing business in Southern Nevada?

I think that our huge customer base from all over the world gives us an advantage that booksellers in smaller, more remote communities may not encounter.

What have you learned from the recession?

The recession is what you make of it. I like to think that I have the opportunity to be part of making our economy and the world a better place.
