Henderson breakfast joint, with roots in Reno, makes glorious debut

People in Las Vegas who say there’s nothing redeeming about Reno probably haven’t tried Peg’s Glorified Ham n Eggs. Founded there in 1999, the restaurant known for its huevos rancheros and Hawaiian dishes among other massive breakfast plates, opened its first valley location in Henderson on Sept. 12.

“Las Vegas is one of our favorite spots in the world and we wanted to work in paradise,” owner Jewel Farrell said.

It was that same mindset that coaxed Farrell’s parents, the late Fred and JoAnna Lee, from their hometown of Salem, Oregon, to Reno, where they founded Peg’s after 35 years of working in the restaurant business. The name — an ode to JoAnna Lee’s nickname — also includes "glorious," because everything is made in-house each day.

Farrell, the founders’ daughter, and husband Dave Farrell, who co-owns the Henderson restaurant and oversees its kitchen, insist on keeping the “mom and pop shop” in the family, she said. The Henderson location is the family’s eighth namesake restaurant to open its doors.

The others, located across Northern Nevada and Roseville, California, are owned and operated by Fred and JoAnna Lee’s other three children and two of their 12 grandchildren.

“My parents opened the first one, then the rest of us jumped on the bandwagon,” Farrell said. “It’s all family and you’ll see at least one of us at our locations.”

Peg’s huevos rancheros ($9.99), the restaurant’s signature dish, included an egg made to order (Farrell recommended over easy), on a soft corn tortilla, smothered in jack cheese and a homemade tomato, onion and pepper-based ranchero sauce. For an extra kick, a single jalapeño rested on top.

Surrounded by pinto beans with melted cheddar cheese, hash browns that were crispy but not overdone, pico de gallo, slaw and a melon wedge spread across the 13-inch skillet, the plate had plenty of food to fill up for an early lunch.

Customer Christina Chipman ordered the chile relleno (stuffed pepper) and eggs dish, also called the French dip daily special “to die for.”

“Phenomenal, and there was a lot of food,” Chipman said. “It’s delicious.”

Peg's is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., except Christmas and Thanksgiving, at 9905 S. Eastern Ave.
