Lawsuit seeks to break logjam over disputed bus contract

First Transit Inc. of Cincinnati is suing the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada in hopes a judge will award it a disputed bus contract worth $83 million per year.

The company, represented by heavyweight Las Vegas law firm Lionel Sawyer & Collins, filed suit Friday in Clark County District Court.

An updated filing Tuesday said the current contract for the local bus system expires Sept. 25 and court intervention is needed to break a logjam on the RTC board on whether to award the contract to First Transit or extend the current contract with Veolia Transportation.

The disputed contract is for three years but can be extended twice for two years each.

Attorneys for the RTC and Veolia have not yet responded to the suit, court records showed Wednesday. The records indicate no hearing date has been set.
