Earl of Sandwich, a restaurant that features fresh meats and cheeses, opened at the Eatery in the Palms this month. The restaurant was created by a direct descendent of John Montagu, the Earl who invented putting meat between bread in 1762.

Seven local organizations received Small Diversity Business Awards from the Women’s Chamber of Commerce at a June 29 luncheon at Monte Carlo. The awards and the honorees: Independent Contractor of the Year — Nancy Marcellus, AFLAC ; Home-Based Business of the Year — Decolletage; New Business of the Year — Williams Professional Services, LLC; Community Nonprofit of the Year —Urban Chamber of Commerce; Minority Business of the Year — Proforma Element 7; Small Business of the Year — Flying ICU, Lifeguard International; Top Honor Entrepreneur of the Year — Karen Scherer, owner, A Flamingo Glass & Engraving.

Two Nevada tribes will receive grants from the Rural Business Enterprise Grant program for projects that finance the development of small and emerging rural businesses. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the selection of 27 projects to support small emerging businesses in Native American communities. The Moapa Band of Paiutes in Southern Nevada will receive $65,000 to purchase a bulldozer that will be used in the tribe’s wood waste recycling operations. The Wells Band of the TeMoak Tribe of Western Shoshone Indians will receive $52,800 to conduct a financial and market feasibility study and business plan for a Holiday Inn Express on tribal lands.
