City National Bank colleagues kicked off Three Square’s 2014-2015 Backpack For Kids program by filling more than 2,800 bags of food for at-risk students in the Clark County School District. The Backpack for Kids Program assists about 270 schools with more than 5,000 children receiving supplemental weekend meals each week.

Bank of Nevada executives donated $10,000 to the Delta Academy, a charter school in North Las Vegas. The donation will allow the school to purchase a comprehensive literacy program.

City National Bank donated $3,000 to the Public Education Foundation in support of its Reach Out and Read program. Reach Out and Read helps preschool-age children develop a love of reading while at 10 pediatric clinics in Southern Nevada. City National’s donation will help provide 1,110 new books to children throughout the year.

Dress for Success Southern Nevada raised about $40,000 at the July 26 Power Walk at the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. With support from its title sponsor Southwest Medical Associates, the third annual event attracted about 500 walkers. Proceeds will benefit the charity’s programs to assist disadvantaged women in finding employment and achieving self-sufficiency.

Nevada State Bank raised money for the American Heart Association by selling paper hearts in August. In 2013, the heart sale total was $6,657. The bank is a leading sponsor and top fundraiser of the Heart Walk on Nov. 8.

America First Credit Union employees donated 43 backpacks, 58 notebooks, 494 pencils, 205 pens, 30 folders and other supplies to Gibson Middle School.

MGM Resorts International employees have pledged more than $5 million this year to support nonprofit organizations in Nevada, Michigan and Mississippi, as well as other regional and national nonprofit organizations. This year’s campaign will support more than 1,400 charities.

Nevada State Bank donated $25,000 to Eye Care 4 Kids, a nonprofit group that provided free eyeglasses to more than 1,500 low-income Southern Nevada schoolchildren last school year.

The SBE Foundation, charitable arm of Sam Nazarian’s hospitality and entertainment company, donated $30,000 to After-School All-Stars Las Vegas during the “Ringing of the Bell” at SLS Las Vegas, a ceremony that signals the opening of each of Nazarian’s properties.

Allstate agency owner Mahnaz Feda received the Agency Hands in the Community Award for her commitment to helping others. This award earned Palo Verde High School, where Feda volunteers, a $1,000 grant from the Allstate Foundation.

The Society for Information Management – Las Vegas chapter donated $15,000 to the Autism Community Trust. The money will be used for tablets and other technology.

Margaret “Poco” Davis of North Las Vegas is serving a one-year term as president of the board of directors for Soroptimist, a global volunteer organization of women. Davis is a member of Soroptimist International of Metropolitan Las Vegas.

Caesars Foundation approved 16 grants totaling nearly $1 million at its third-quarter meeting. Caesars Foundation is funded by operating income and gifts from Caesars Entertainment. Organizations receiving funding include: American Diabetes Association in New Orleans; Big Brothers Big Sisters in Las Vegas; Catholic Schools Foundation in Boston; Don Bosco Senior Center in Kansas City, Mo.; First Place for Youth in Oakland, Calif.; Liberty’s Kitchen in New Orleans; Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas; MANNA Food Bank in Cherokee, N.C.; National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tenn.; Rose Brooks Center in Kansas City, Mo.; Special Olympics in Las Vegas; the Prince’s Initiative for Mature Enterprise (PRIME) in the United Kingdom; Touro University in Henderson; and Vegas PBS.

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the fountain at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood is pink. All change tossed into the pink fountain will benefit the Southern Nevada affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. At the Hard Rock Cafe and Hard Rock Hotel, initiatives include guest rooms with pink sheets, breast cancer awareness walks; musicians will decorate pink guitars for auction. Coins collected from the Linq fountain will go toward breast cancer research. Déjà Vu Showgirls and Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club hosted the Who’s Your Caddy charity golf and poker tournament to raise money for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Brighton Collectibles will donate $10 from each 2014 Power of Pink Bracelet purchase made to St. Rose Dominican Hospitals’ RED Rose Program. Station Casinos properties are featuring specialty menu items and table games. Cabo Wabo Cantina in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood is offering a pair of specialty cocktails and pink wristbands. Towbin Dodge Superstore will donate $100 to Susan G. Komen of Southern Nevada for every new car and truck sold through Oct. 17.

Juliana McRae, president of the Las Vegas Philharmonic Guild, was awarded the Most Valuable Player Award at the annual meeting of the members of the Association of California Symphony Orchestras. The award recognizes exemplary volunteers.

Goodie Two Shoes Foundation outfitted its 50,000th child Sept. 12. The shoe-store-on-wheels was at Lowman Elementary School.

Keep Las Vegas Beautiful won a $20,000 Keep America Beautiful/Lowe’s Community Improvement grant to support KLVB’s mission to provide three at-risk schools, at which 90 percent of the students receive free or reduced-cost lunch, with an outdoor garden classroom.

Nevada Title Company and its affiliate Nevada Construction Services delivered school supplies to Ira J. Earl Elementary School as part of a 15-year partnership with the Clark County School District Focus School Project. The companies collected hundreds of items such as backpacks and toiletries.

The Henderson Police Officers’ Association sponsored William Ledesma in the Southern Nevada Devil Pups 2014 Youth Leadership Program at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The sponsorship provided expenses for supplies and participation costs.

Anthony Golden, a Fisher & Phillips associate, was elected to the board of Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada.

The Morris A. Hazan Family Foundation donated $10,000 to After-School All-Stars Las Vegas.

Windsong Trust, a private foundation for children’s education, gave $1 million to United Way of Southern Nevada. The grant provides children ages 5 years and younger an opportunity to attend high-quality preschool programs.

The SK+G Goose Summer Road Trip Campaign wrapped up Sept. 11 when senior vice president of strategy Jim Gentleman and the SK+G goose dropped off a $1,000 check to Three Square Food Bank. The 10-week social media campaign followed SK+G’s mascot, the goose, as he ventured to iconic Las Vegas locations. Donations were contingent upon the activity of followers. Each tweet or re-tweet using #FollowThatGoose was equivalent to a $1 donation.

America First Credit Union’s 10th annual community food drive runs through Oct. 18 at all 109 Utah and Southern Nevada locations. All branches will accept donations of nonperishable food.

The Governor’s Points of Light Award was given to a number of Southern Nevada businesses and people for volunteer service. Individual volunteers honored included Lianne Kountz of Henderson, Joan Miller of Las Vegas and Eric Zawid of Las Vegas. Volunteer managers honored included Sharon Harding of Las Vegas, Patti Johnson of Las Vegas and Jan Linsday of Pahrump. Programs honored included Lend A Hand of Boulder City. Businesses that were honored included IGT, Southwest Gas and the Cosmopolitan.

“Together We Can,” presented by Smith’s Food & Drug Stores, raised $100,000 for Three Square Food Bank. With the funds raised, Three Square will provide 300,000 meals to those in need in Southern Nevada.

Bank of Nevada provided $40,000 to fund financial literacy programs at Title 1 elementary schools in the Clark County School District. The program provides 20 schools with $2,000 each to support a yearlong financial literacy education program that teaches the fundamentals for understanding personal finances.
