    • Allstate agency owner Michael Westra received an Agency Hands in the Community Award for his commitment to helping others. He received five $1,000 grants from the Allstate Foundation that went to the PTA Nevada Congress, Henderson Community Foundation, Henderson Allied Community Advocates, Henderson Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Friends of the Henderson District Public Libraries. The PTA grant will be used for the marine science lab at Estes McDoniel Elementary School, which students from other schools frequently visit.

    • Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada hosted its second annual “Thanks-A-Lot” volunteer appreciation dinner to honor 100 of the organization’s top volunteers. Ambassador Girl Scouts (grades 11-12) worked alongside Cindy Werth, a pastry chef at the Stratosphere, to prepare and host the dinner provided by Winder Farms.

    • Kim Amato, founder of Baby’s Bounty, was named the Good Housekeeping “Seal Star” in the December issue. Amato launched Baby’s Bounty five years ago to help babies born into low-income families by distributing cribs, car seats, clothes and other essential items. Since then, more than 2,500 infants have received assistance.

    • Dr. Troy Watson, director of the Foot and Ankle Institute at Desert Orthopaedic Center, and his staff provided foot screenings and footwear to clients of the Salvation Army. Precision Orthotics and Del Webb Middle School also donated to the campaign. Zappos’ sister company, 6pm.com, donated 700 pairs of shoes, as well.

    • Nine Las Vegans were honored with the Hometown Heroes Leif Erikson Award recognizing people who serve the community. Honored were: Patrick C. Burke, Metro Police; Gina Greisen, animal activist; Barbara Kenig, founder of E Bunny; Manda Kristof, teacher at Ferron Elementary School; Karen Layne, animal activist; Julie Murray, founder of Three Square; Fred Shultz, founder of Positively Kids; Linda Smith, Opportunity Village and Mary Vail, philanthropic publicist. A special lifetime achievement award was presented to the Metro Police as well.
