Surge of visitors expected in Las Vegas for Mexican Independence Day

More than 6,000 tourists are expected to arrive in Las Vegas in the next three days to celebrate Mexican Independence Day over the weekend.

Officials at McCarran International Airport said 22 charter flights, in addition to 20 scheduled commercial flights, from nine cities are scheduled to arrive at Terminal 3 between Wednesday and Friday.

The number of visitors is expected to increase by 5 percent over last year’s holiday celebration.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority says international travelers stay longer and spend an average $1,146 per trip on nongaming purchases.

AeroMexico, Magnicharters, VivaAerobus and Volaris have regularly scheduled service from three cities, but the added charters will offer nonstop flights from six cities that don’t normally have direct flights to Las Vegas.

Mexico’s independence from Spain is celebrated Sept. 16, and several entertainment events geared to Mexican audiences are scheduled this weekend.
