A 31-page special section highlighting Nevada’s business community will greet the estimated 5 million readers of Delta Air Lines’ inflight magazine Sky next month.

“Profile: Nevada” tells the story of the state’s efforts to diversify its economy in a package of features, photos and Q&A’s in the magazine that will be in the seatback pockets on every Delta plane.

The June edition of Sky was unveiled Wednesday at a reception at Comme Ca restaurant at the Cosmopolitan. Several of the state’s top economic development leaders attended the invitation-only reception.

Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, who heads the Nevada Economic Development Commission and the Nevada Tourism Commission, joked that Delta has promised to suspend all inflight entertainment so that passengers can focus on the magazine.

“These have been trying times, but I think we’re turning the corner,” Krolicki said of the state’s economy. “Everybody knows that we have great resorts here, but this special section talks about the business side of our state. It’s a win-win for us.”

Somer Hollingsworth, president and CEO of the Nevada Development Authority, said the Sky feature “could not have happened at a better time” because companies that have weathered the Great Recession are now ready to engage their expansion or relocation plans that were put on hold when money was tighter. He added that the demographics of the average Delta passenger “are perfect for us.”

Mike Skaggs, the state’s director of economic development, said, “A lot of people that we talk to know about Las Vegas and the tourism in our state. But they don’t know as much about the business side, and I think this will open some eyes.”

The main story in the package included comments from Krolicki, Skaggs, Hollingsworth, Maureen Peckman, chief emerging business officer for Cleveland Clinic Nevada; Charlie Geocaris, director of the Nevada Film Office; Tom Fair, vice president of renewable energy for NV Energy; and Stephen Wells, president of the Desert Research Institute.

The spread also has short Q&A’s with Gov. Brian Sandoval and Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman. It features a “native and newcomer” piece with Dana White, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, as the native, and Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com, as the newcomer.

Breakout features on the arts, the city’s new crop of celebrity chefs, the city’s emerging health-care industry, UNLV, UNR, the casino industry’s philanthropic efforts and a road trip to Reno and Lake Tahoe also are included.

Tony Klekas, field director of airport customer service for Delta, said the 31-page section of the magazine would have an advertising value of $1.5 million.

Delta is the only major air carrier that serves three Nevada airports, in Las Vegas, Reno and Elko.

The airline is the second-busiest at McCarran International Airport, behind Southwest Airlines, with more than 40 daily flights. The Atlanta-based airline is introducing nonstop flights between Reno and Minneapolis on July 1.
