Work begins on first of three Cobalt Data centers in the valley

A startup Las Vegas data-center operator has begun building its first facility.

Cobalt Data Centers said Tuesday it began renovation work for its Cobalt Cheyenne Data Center. The 34,000-square-foot facility is open to multiple users and is located at 7710 W. Cheyenne Ave., in a space formerly occupied by PurchasePro, an e-commerce company that filed for bankruptcy protection in 2002.

Cobalt Data was formed last year and plans to operate three data centers in the Las Vegas Valley. The first, on West Cheyenne, is slated to open in December and will include dozens of air conditioning units and six generators, CEO Mike Ballard said.

The second data center, a 64,000-square-foot facility on East Sahara Avenue, will open in 2014. There is no timeline yet for the third center, a 388,000-square-foot, four-building complex on St. Rose Parkway in Henderson, Ballard said.

He plans to build the Sahara and St. Rose data centers from scratch.
