Taxable sales increase in Clark County, statewide

Sparked by the clothing and furniture business, taxable sales rose in Clark County by 8.6 percent in November, the seventh consecutive month of a gain.

The state Tax Department reported Monday that taxable sales, one indicator of the economy, totaled $2.4 billion compared with $2.2 billion in November 2010.

Statewide, taxable sales increased by 9.6 percent to $3.3 billion and the state collected $266.2 million from the sales and use tax in November.

In Clark County, the sale of furniture during November shot up 21.7 percent and the clothing business rose 15.4 percent in the start of the Christmas shopping season.

The department said motor vehicles sales increased 8.7 percent, while building materials were up 8.1 percent and general merchandise stores rose 3.9 percent.

Business in the bar and restaurant category was up 7.9 percent, the ninth straight month of an increase in Clark County.

For the fiscal year so far, taxable sales are up 6.9 percent in Clark County.

The department reported 14 of the 17 counties registered an increase. Only Carson City, Humboldt and White Pine counties recorded a decrease. Carson was down 1 percent, while Humboldt was off 5 percent and White Pine fell 8.1 percent.

Some of the rural counties registered a gain of 100 percent or more compared to a year ago. Esmeralda jumped by 132.2 percent, Storey was up 120 percent, Lincoln gained 113.3 percent and Lander was up 104.6 percent.

It said the statewide collections from the sales and use tax is $8.9 million, or 2.6 percent ahead of the projections of the Economic Forum for this fiscal year so far.
