    • The Nevada State Contactors Board and the Southern Nevada Air Conditioning Refrigeration Service Contractors Association installed new air conditioners in three homes as part of their annual Mission Cool Off program. Selections were based on special needs or circumstances. Companies donating labor: AireServ; Yes! Air Conditioning & Plumbing; Sahara Air Conditioning & Heating Inc.; Atlas Crane Inc.; College of Southern Nevada and Desert Crane Services, Inc. Goodman Manufacturing donated an AC unit. AC units also were donated by companies that wished to remain anonymous and worked through Carl’s Air Conditioning & Sheet Metal Inc. and AireServ.

    • The Las Vegas 51s baseball team held a Girl Scout Night fundraiser May 18 at Cashman Field. Proceeds from tickets purchased through Girl Scouts went toward membership and leadership programs for girls in Southern Nevada.

    • San Gennaro Feast president Anthony Palmisano donated 600 admission tickets to teachers and $1,000 to the Public Education Foundation during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 7-11. Money given to the foundation will be used to support school music and arts activities through the Artists 4 Kidz program, which connects the Las Vegas arts community with Clark County School District students.

    • Shade Tree of Las Vegas has received a $35,000 grant from the Starbucks community program “Vote. Give. Grow.” Shade Tree, a local nonprofit organization that shelters women, children and pets affected by domestic violence, received the largest monetary award in Nevada.

    • UnitedHealthcare has awarded more than $2,000 in HEROES grants to Create a Change Now and Touro University in Southern Nevada for youth-led projects that address childhood obesity. The HEROES program is a service-learning, health literacy initiative designed to create and implement hands-on programs to encourage healthy eating and lifestyles. Create a Change Now educates children on nutrition. The School of Occupational Therapy at Touro University offers a “Healthy Choices for Me” program geared toward children ages 5 to 11.

    • The Las Vegas Territory awarded scholarships to two students in the field of hospitality and tourism. Recipients were Burnetta Schlecter of the College of Southern Nevada and Alysha Smith of the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism at Valley High School. The Las Vegas Territory promotes non-gaming and outlying tourism entities, as well as scenic attractions, outdoor recreation and events throughout the region.

    • Caesars Palace will donate coins recovered from its large front fountain to the University Medical Center Trauma Center and Lions Burn Care Unit. The iconic fountain has been the past site of high-profile events and has frequently been used in photo shoots and movies. The UMC Trauma and Burn Center serves patients within a 10,000-square-mile region.

      Attorneys and staff members from the law firm of Holland & Hart taught Hollingsworth Elementary School students about financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship on May 18 through “JA in a Day,” a Junior Achievement program.

    • Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada has received an $83,605 grant from the Southern Nevada affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help improve breast health among the uninsured. The grant will support the Healthy Women’s Screening Program, an initiative to provide preventive well-women exams.

    • The Hard Rock Cafe donated all proceeds from a June 10 “Kidapalooza” event to the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation.

    • The annual Links for Life charity golf tournament, a nonprofit project of Colliers International, raised $54,000 in support of children’s charities in Southern Nevada, including Three Square Food Bank, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Candlelighters. Since its inception in 1993, the tournament has raised more than $2 million for regional charities.

    • Taco Bell franchisee Bill Allmon presented $18,000 in grants to three Las Vegas nonprofit organizations. The Boys & Girls Club of Las Vegas received $10,000, the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson received $5,000 and the Greater Las Vegas After-School All-Stars received $3,000. The grants were provided through the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens with the support of donations made at Las Vegas-area Taco Bells. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas will use the funds to take 20 teens on a tour of California colleges. Boys & Girls Clubs of Henderson will support its Graduate2Go program which assists teens with college preparation. After-School All-Stars will support Camp Las Vegas, which helps 70 incoming high school freshmen develop leadership skills and a vision for their education.

    • The Latin Chamber of Commerce awarded $107,000 in scholarships to 128 Clark County students at its annual scholarship luncheon. Matt Smith Physical Therapy was a contributing sponsor of scholarships given to Alejandra Acosta of Rancho High School, Chloe Nieves of Silverado High School and Vilma Silva of Cheyenne High School. Each was awarded a scholarship to UNLV to continue education in health care. Smith’s company was recognized for its support of students in the health care field.

    • Prudential Americana Group is partnering with Move For Hunger, a nationwide organization that helps people who are moving donate non-perishable food to those in need. Americana Companies, which has relocation operations in both Nevada and Arizona, has become a national sponsor with Move For Hunger, which recently received a $125,000 grant from Chase Bank.

    • The Southern Nevada Office of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society announced record-breaking fundraising totals at this year’s grand finale of the Annual Man and Woman of the Year competition. Two women and four men raised $90,525 during the 10-week contest. The local LLS chapter named top fundraisers Vince Durocher Man of the Year and Donni Weaver Woman of the Year. Durocher led the competition with a fundraising total of $20,868. Weaver, a member of the local LLS Board of Trustees and United Healthcare employee, generated $14,185. Funds raised by Man and Woman of the Year participants help provide funding for blood cancer research as well as financial assistance for patients, free educational materials, patient and family support groups and peer-to-peer counseling program.

    • The PENTA Building Group recently held its eighth annual PENTA Charity Golf Classic at the Revere Golf Club. Participants, subcontractors and vendors who attended the tournament raised $90,000 for the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation and the Women’s Development Center. Each organization received $45,000.

    • The Nevada Association of Realtors has joined forces with food banks throughout the state to donate food and funds to help them feed local children. NVAR president Blane Johnson said NVAR is urging its nearly 14,000 members to donate to local food banks, such as Three Square in Las Vegas and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada in Reno, to help them feed needy children, especially during the summer months when the need is greater because children are not in school. According to local food banks, one out of every six households in Nevada struggle with hunger. To donate or get more information, visit www.NVAR.org.

    • The Las Vegas Wranglers announced that almost $400,000 was donated back to the Las Vegas community during the 2011-12 season. Specialty jersey auctions brought in over $46,000. Through a St. Patrick’s Day-themed jersey and donations for players to shave their heads, the Wranglers were able to donate $32,577 to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and childhood cancer research. Almost $9,000 went to two local breast cancer organizations after the return of “Pink in the Rink” in February. For the ninth consecutive season, the Wranglers partnered with NV Energy to donate money to a local nonprofit organization for each goal scored at home. This season, the YMCA of Southern Nevada received a $10,000 donation after the Wranglers scored 126 home goals in 36 regular-season games. The team also worked with Cell Phones for Soldiers to collect 226 phones to recycle into calling cards for overseas troops.

    • The Tronox LLC Henderson plant congratulated the 12 students who graduated from the Robert L. Taylor Elementrary Robotics Club, an after-school extracurricular club offered to the school’s fourth- and fifth-graders. This is Tronox LLC’s third year in serving as a financial partner for the club.

    • The Las Vegas Hospitality Association’s 26th annual fundraising golf tournament held at Cascata Golf Club on May 31 raised more than $15,000 for local scholarships and charities.

    • Silver State Schools Credit Union representatives recently presented a check for $15,000 to the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals of St. Rose in Las Vegas.
