Railroad bridge work closing stretch of Interstate 15

One of the city’s main routes to McCarran International Airport will be blocked this weekend with the closure of southbound Interstate 15 between Russell Road and Interstate 215.

The highway will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Sunday to install a new railroad overpass. The Nevada Department of Transportation will detour traffic at Russell Road and is warning motorists of traffic delays.

In addition, the southbound on-ramps at Flamingo Road, Tropicana Avenue and Russell Road will be closed. Dean Martin Drive will be closed at the railroad grade crossing.

Northbound I-15 won’t be affected by the closure.

A new bridge is being built for a rail spur into Henderson to accommodate widened lanes and a freeway frontage road.

Traffic will be detoured off I-15 to Decatur Boulevard and rerouted to the Las Vegas Beltway. People traveling to the airport are encouraged to travel by way of Tropicana Avenue.

The closure is ill-timed for McCarran, which is the site of a charitable run on the new Terminal 3 access roads Saturday morning.
