Thanks to flux capacitor, Plaza revisits movie role

‘Back to the Future’ celebration today in downtown Las Vegas

The Plaza, which served as the backdrop for Pleasure Paradise in “Back to the Future II,” will mark the occasion with a special event on Oct. 21.

Las Vegas, like no other place in the U.S., blurs the line between what's considered passé and what’s considered retro and hip.

And today, it will be even harder to tell the difference under the dome at the Plaza as the resort celebrates Oct. 21, the “future” arrival date of Marty McFly and Doc Brown in “Back to the Future.”

The Plaza itself was a character of sorts: Its facade was the inspiration for the Pleasure Paradise Casino & Hotel owned by one of the movie’s characters, Biff Tannen.

And the date Oct. 21 itself is also special. At one point in the film, which was set in the 1980s, McFly (Michael J. Fox) travels into the future to visit the specific date of Oct. 21, 2015.

On that date last year, the Plaza held its first “Back to the Future” event and turnout from fans of the movie “was far more than expected,” Plaza spokeswoman Amy E. S. Maier said. “Many of the people there were dressed up as characters from the movie.”

And this year, Maier said, the Plaza and members of the Las Vegas DeLorean Club wanted to re-create the feeling.

This year’s event starts at 3 p.m. “Back to the Future” faithful can take pictures with characters from the movie and DeLoreans, including a replica of the movie’s car/time machine.

Guests are encouraged to dress in ‘80s outfits or as their favorite character. A costume contest will be held at 8 p.m., with winners for the best ‘80s outfit and the best movie costume each winning $250.

In addition, all three “Back to the Future” movies will be playing on televisions in the beer garden next to the dome.
