MGM Resorts announced Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, that it had completed work on a $70 million project to expand the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, shown here.

MGM Resorts has wrapped up work on an expansion of the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, the company announced in a news release.

The $70 million project to enlarge and enhance the convention center was completed with the opening of the 70,000-square-foot Oceanside Ballroom, MGM Resorts said in the release today. Other additions include 350,000 square feet of exhibit space, a 20,000-square-foot foyer and underground parking, which opened in August. In all, the project brought the convention center's total square footage to 2 million, including more than 900,000 square feet of exhibit space.

The work was part of a multiyear project to upgrade and expand the convention center and the Mandalay Bay resort. MGM Resorts said in the release that a $100 million redesign of the resort's 3,000 guest rooms and suites, which was part of that project, is scheduled to be completed next month.

The convention center project included installation of 8 acres of solar arrays, part of a combined array that covers 28 acres and will generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 1,300 homes, the company said.

If plans go as expected, two other Las Vegas convention centers will soon begin undergoing expansion work. The Las Vegas Convention Center is planning a $2.3 billion expansion that includes demolition of the former Riviera, and MGM Resorts announced recently that it was launching a $154 million project to enlarge the Aria convention center.
