    • Chelsey Garcia, who recently completed fourth grade at Lowman Elementary School, won the 2013 Johnson Jacobson Wilcox CPAs art contest. Garcia received a basket of art supplies and had her artwork featured on the firm’s Fourth of July card. The firm also donated $5,000 to Lowman Elementary School.

    • Kenneth D. Goodrich, an HVAC specialist and managing partner of the investment group Phoenix Peach, established a $100,000 scholarship endowment at the College of Southern Nevada. Titled “The Kenneth and Wendy Goodrich CSN Post-9/11 Veteran HVAC Employment Program,” the endowment will provide tools to military veterans who graduate from the school’s air conditioning technology program.

    • Local firefighters donated $19,000 to the Public Education Foundation for student scholarships. The Professional Firefighters of Nevada donated $10,000; the North Las Vegas Professional Fire Fighters donated $3,000; the Henderson Firefighter’s Benevolent Association donated $500; the Las Vegas Professional Firefighters donated $3,500; and the Henderson Professional Firefighters donated $2,000. In addition, the Professional Firefighters of Nevada partnered with the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension to start a wildfire education program. The firefighters will distribute campaign posters to fire stations, government centers, libraries, community centers, grocery stores and convenience stores.

    • JPMorgan Chase donated $8,000 to the Public Education Foundation for its Teacher Exchange program, which provides teachers with reusable and recycled materials, supplies and equipment for their classrooms.

    • Three Square Food Bank received a $25,000 grant from Morgan Stanley to fund its “BackPack for Kids Program,” which helps feed children when they are out of school. Morgan Stanley has committed more than $13 million to Feeding America to feed children and families nationwide.

    • Almost 120 UnitedHealthcare employees packed 4,500 boxes of food at Three Square to provide local people in need 50,000 meals. In addition, Smithfield partnered with Vons, the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the Speedway Children’s Charities to donate 40,000 pounds of protein to Three Square. City National Bank also partnered with Three Square to support its backpack and food sorting programs. The bank contributed $2,500 to the organization, and a number of City National employees volunteered to sort food and fill backpacks with food.

    • Chapman Chrysler Jeep Ram donated $2,000 to Lights 4 Love, which aims to save people’s lives by shortening emergency personnel response times.

    • The Dave Rice Foundation donated more than $250,000 in grants to autism organizations in Southern Nevada, including the UNLV Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders, the Torino Foundation, the Grant A Gift Autism Foundation, Touro University Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities, Families for Effective Autism Treatment of Southern Nevada, the Nevada Partnership for Inclusive Education and Peoples Autism Foundation.

    • HELP of Southern Nevada is collecting bottled water at local Whole Foods Markets through Aug. 31 to distribute to homeless people. In addition, for every bottle of Real Water bought at Whole Foods, the company will donate a bottle of water to area homeless.

    • The Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood collected change tossed into its fountain for WestCare Nevada, which offers substance abuse treatment, homeless and runaway shelters, vocational counseling and mental health programs.

    • The 15th annual Tiger Jam raised more than $800,000 for Tiger Woods Foundation, which provides education opportunities for children. The weekend included a charity poker game, golf tournament at the Cascata Golf Club, reception and auction at the House of Blues and a concert by Kid Rock at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

    • Business consulting company OB1 donated $4,000 to After-School All-Stars Las Vegas, which serves at-risk Clark County students. Money will be used for free after-hours programming, including homework help, sports, dance and music. Philanthropist Steve Mizel also donated $5,000 to After-School All-Stars in Norman Brownstein’s name to honor his 70th birthday. Since 2007, the Mizel Family Foundation has donated more than $100,000 to the organization.

    • Golden Rainbow partnered with the Smith Center for the Performing Arts to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS. More than 100 volunteers wore red and came together at Symphony Park to create a large ribbon with their bodies.

    • Rí Rá Las Vegas raised $4,800 for the Shriners Hospitals for Children at its inaugural Golf Classic at the Silverstone Golf Club. Rí Rá also hosted an after-party with a silent auction and live music.

    • Colliers International – Las Vegas’ 18th annual Links for Life charity golf tournament raised more than $60,000 for children’s charities in Southern Nevada. The event was held at the Las Vegas Country Club and included golf, a BBQ lunch, raffles and a live auction. The Links for Life Foundation has contributed more than $2.1 million to local children’s charities since its inception in 1995. So far this year, the group has contributed $12,500 to Create a Change Now, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Sport Social, Boys Town Nevada, the Nevada Children’s Center and Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada. In addition, the Links for Life Foundation organized a cabana rental program at the Hard Rock Hotel to support the Discovery Children’s Museum. Poolside cabanas rented for $100 a day, with all proceeds benefiting the museum.

    • Tan Las Vegas Anthem hosted a fundraiser to benefit Red Rock Search and Rescue, which functions solely on donations and volunteerism. The shop donated half of the revenue raised from customers buying VersaSpa spray tans and Custom Airbrush spray tans.

    • A Level Playing Field Foundation raised $25,000 for the Rancho High School football program during a golf tournament at the Palm Valley Golf Course. Money will help pay for uniforms, gear and equipment.

    • The 15th annual Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers/American Gaming Association Golf Classic presented by JCM Global raised $129,000 for the National Center for Responsible Gaming. The event, held at the Cascata Golf Club, drew 140 players and more than 30 company sponsors. The event has raised more than $1.2 million since its inception.

    • Bank of America awarded $85,000 to six nonprofits that support workforce development. The recipients were the Boys and Girls Club of Southern Nevada, Special Olympics Nevada, the Foundation for an Independent Tomorrow, Goodwill Industries of Southern Nevada, Spread the Word Nevada and the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada.

    • Kenberli Gomez, of West Preparatory Academy, won the 2013 Students with a Cause PSA contest sponsored by the Richard Harris Law Firm. The contest, in its fourth year, focused on bullying. Gomez won a $1,500 scholarship, and the law firm donated $500 to West Preparatory Academy.

    • As part of a re-opening ceremony for the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 6005 Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, the Wal-Mart Foundation and Wal-Mart’s Nevada State Giving Program donated $100,000 to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, $60,000 to Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada and $50,000 to the Nevada Youth Alliance. Wal-Mart also donated a $3,000 scholarship to the Las Vegas chapter of Delta Mu Delta at the University of Phoenix. Delta Mu Delta is an international honor society for students studying business administration.

    • Dr. Steven Leibowitz, an ophthalmologist, recently completed his fifth medical mission. He traveled to the British West Indies to perform surgeries to treat Graves’ Disease and other tearing conditions. Leibowitz is medical director of the Center for Graves’ Disease at Sunrise Hospital and funds his own missions.
