Talents behind 'Tales from the Fremont Street' gather to benefit local nonprofit organizations

The vivid imaginations of some of Las Vegas’ best graphic storytellers come alive within the pages of “Tales from the Fremont Street,” the second comic book anthology benefitting the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Foundation's support of the Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival, but it will be the artists themselves who shine during a special event at Alternate Reality Comics (4110 S. Maryland Parkway #8) this Saturday, Feb. 25, from noon to 3 p.m.
Cover artist Jska Priebe, editor/contributor Pj Perez, and creators Deryl Skelton, Ed Hawkins, F Andrew Taylor and Warren Wucinich will be on hand to sign and sell copies of both "Tales from Fremont Street" and its predecessor, "Tales from the Boneyard." As well, the event celebrates a month-long exhibition of selected original art from "Tales from Fremont Street," which will be showing inside Alternate Reality’s “Artist Spotlight” space. The art originally debuted in a larger exhibition at UNLV's Barrick Museum last fall.
In addition, guests are asked to bring donations for the SafeNest shelter for victims of domestic abuse, based on the organization's current Wish List. Alternate Reality owner Ralph Mathieu will also be donating a portion of the day’s back issue sales and proceeds from raffle tickets to the shelter. Free refreshments will also be available for those in attendance at the signing.
Published by local comic book company Pop! Goes the Icon to commemorate and benefit the Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival, "Tales from Fremont Street" has already raised almost $700 from sales, approaching the 2011 donation of more than $1000 from sales of "Tales from the Boneyard." Copies of the anthologies are available at local comic shops, including MaximuM Comics, Cosmic Comics and, of course, Alternate Reality, as well as via the Pop! Goes the Icon website at www.popgoestheicon.com.
