UNLV's CFA Team Advance to National Competition

Four UNLV seniors will travel to New York City after winning local competition.

LAS VEGAS – For the first time in UNLV history, the Lee School of Business produced a team that won the Charted Financial Analyst Institute Research Challenge Southwest Regional. The team advances to the America’s Regional competition on April 9th in New York City.

The CFA Institute Research Challenge offers students the unique opportunity to develop and present an equity research report and compete on a global basis. Students learn from leading industry experts, their mentors and peers from the world’s top business schools. This annual educational initiative is designed to promote best practices in equity research among the next generation of analysts through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills.

UNLV students Mike Peregrina, Joel Nelson, Nico Rivellini, and Aaron Murdock, with support from Chris Griffin, started working on the challenge in October. On February 23, the foursome won the Southwest Regional. They defeated teams from Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, University of Arizona and University of New Mexico.

The challenge consisted of a 10-page paper, a 10-minute presentation and 10 minutes of a question and answer session from a panel of judges.

The UNLV team will now compete at the America Regional on April 9th. The finals of the regional will be broadcast live online at www.researchchallenge.org. They will compete against other winners from the United States as well as international competition from Canada and South America. The winners of the American Regional will compete in the Global Finals on April 11th in New York City.
