Whiz Kids in Jeopardy Due to Lack of Funds

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - Coronado High School’s Varsity Quiz
Team, after defeating Advanced Technical Academy in the CCSD
Championship Match filmed at KLVX studios, has earned the right
to participate in the National Academic Quiz Tournament (NAQT)
in Atlanta, GA over Memorial Day weekend. Eight team members and
one to two adult chaperones from Coronado will be able to attend
the tournament.
Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Las Vegas, Varsity Quiz has
been an interscholastic academic competition in the Clark County
School District since 1969. Coronado’s Varsity Quiz Team has a
history of being a perennial playoff team since 2004 and won
its first CCSD Championship match in 2008. After winning the
Championship that year, Coronado attended NAQT in Chicago as the
representative from Nevada.
NAQT was founded in 1996 by former quiz-bowl competition
players. Jeopardy! champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter are
both employees of NAQT, and working for that organization has
helped to establish their knowledge base in trivia questions.
However, Coronado’s chances of attending the tournament this
year are currently affected not by rival teams, but by a lack
of money. Although Coronado is fundraising by selling tickets
to the Las Vegas Wranglers game on March 20, hopes to team up
with local restaurants and businesses, and will be playing a
teachers vs. students fundraising match at the school, financial
limitations may prevent Nevada from being represented at NAQT.
While the Kiwanis Club of Las Vegas donates a sum of money to
the winning Varsity Quiz team in order to enable attendance at
NAQT, their financial aid is only the beginning. Total costs
for Coronado’s attendance at the 2012 NAQT are estimated around
$7,100, while the price of airline tickets continues to rise
every day.
“We've practiced a lot almost every day and we need all the
funds we can get to have everyone involved there. I feel
pretty disappointed that the only thing keeping us from the
championship is finances,” says Delian Delev, an 11th grader on
the team.
In order to secure the funds required to attend NAQT, the
Kiwanis Club of Las Vegas has set up an online PayPal donation
button on the following website: http://coronado4nationals.tk,
and on Coronado Varsity Quiz’s Facebook page: http://
facebook.com/varsityquiz. If sufficient funds are not obtained
soon, the team may be forced to miss NAQT, and Nevada will not
be represented there in 2012.
Coronado High School opened in 2001 and is located at 1001
Coronado Center Drive, Henderson NV. The current principal is
Lee Koelliker and the Varsity Quiz coach is Matthew Aberman.
