Free VELscope Oral Cancer Screenings Provided at Dental Designs of Las Vegas on April 6th and 27th

Las Vegas, NV – In honor of the 13th annual Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Timothy Kuiava, DDS and the team at Dental Designs of Las Vegas will be providing free VELscope oral cancer screenings. Everyone in the community is invited to receive a complimentary screening on Friday, April 6th and 27th between the hours of 9:00 am and 11:00 am at 3975 S. Durango Dr. Suite 102, Las Vegas, NV 89147 (between Twain and Flamingo).
Oral cancer is one of the fastest growing cancers in the country and affects people of all ages. VELscope offers hope for the early discovery of oral disease, including pre-cancer and cancer. The leading causes of oral cancer are tobacco and chewing tobacco, alcohol, and the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). More than 37,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year, and 25 percent of those at risk have no risk factors at all.
“Early diagnosis is the key to survival after an oral cancer diagnosis. If detected early enough, oral cancer can be completely cured,” said Dr. Kuiava. “That is why we offer VELscope oral cancer screenings to all of our patients.”
VELscope helps detect oral abnormalities with a blue light that "excites" molecules (called "fluorophores") deep within the layers of oral mucosal tissues. In turn, those fluorophores emit their own light (fluorescence), in shades of green, yellow and red. The VELscope's proprietary filter makes fluorescence visualization possible, by blocking reflected blue light, and by enhancing the contrast between normal and abnormal tissue.
“Oral cancer is typically painless and can go unnoticed in early stages, so it can be difficult to detect with the eye alone. This makes routine screenings even more important,” said Dr. Kuiava. “And because of the higher cure rate with early detection we recommend an oral cancer screening once a year.
