ABC Nevada Applauds President Obama on Solar Project Visit

Las Vegas, NV - The Nevada chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors congratulates President Obama on his decision to visit the Copper Mountain First Solar site in Boulder City Nevada. The project is developing the largest photovoltaic facility in the nation and will employ over three hundred construction workers in the midst of the most difficult economic time in Nevada’s history.
In addition, it is employing both union and non-union companies and workers, a reality that is worth noting in today’s competitive environment says ABC Nevada President Clara Andriola, “One of the most difficult realities brought on by this recession has been the all out push we have seen from the labor unions to exclude non-union companies from participating in these kinds of projects. The fact that President Obama is here to celebrate this project, which employs all Nevadans regardless of union affiliation, is a major development”.
ABC has long maintained that a true economic recovery in Nevada cannot occur until the construction industry is back on its feet and the construction industry cannot recover until the 85-90% of the industry that has freely chosen to be non-union is working as well. “We are grateful that the President has chosen to highlight this project’” said ABC Board Chairman Cliff Springmeyer, “it demonstrates his understanding that all Nevadans must to go back to work if this economic recovery is to truly take hold.”
In addition to the journeymen construction workers employed on the job many apprentices will also find steady work as they seek to advance their education. This includes apprentices from the ABC sponsored electrical and solar installer programs.
“We are extremely proud to have this project showcase our state and federal registered solar apprenticeship program,” said Andriola. “ABC Nevada is the first and only such program in the state and is among the first in the nation. We are delighted that ABC apprentices will have an opportunity to be a part of such a phenomenal project.”
Helix Electric, one of the major electrical contractors on the project, voiced strong support for the utilization of solar apprenticeship students on this project. “This is an exciting project for our company and for our employees,” said Helix Electric President Victor Fuchs. “We are particularly excited for the solar apprentices that will be given an opportunity to be a part of such a significant project. This represents an opportunity for them that does not come along every day”.
