Packing Tips from a Local UPS Store Owner

Care packages are a great way to send your love to college students, family, military personnel, and close friends. The UPS Store at 4780 W. Ann Rd (Ann & Decatur) in the Smith’s Shopping Center offers tips on properly packing your care package items to help them arrive intact.
Steve Koger, owner of the local The UPS Store, said “North Las Vegas residents should place extra care on properly packing food items for loved ones so the items make it to their destination intact and not spoiled.” Here are some tips to use next time you need to ship a care package:
• The UPS Store recommends sending items that will travel well, such as oatmeal, sugar cookies, shortbread, dried fruit, snack mixes and hard candy. Consider using a coffee can or a potato chip canister as a container to ship cookies to avoid crumbling.
• Avoid items that can’t withstand heat or other extreme temperatures, such as chocolate or any foods that require refrigeration. However, if you need to send foods that are extremely perishable you may use up to five (5) pounds of dry ice. Send your treats via UPS Next Day Air or another expedited shipping method to avoid spoilage.
• Pack soft cookies with a slice of bread to help them retain moisture. Don’t package crisp cookies in the same container as soft ones. Moisture from the soft ones will soften the crisp ones.
• Use a new box specifically designed for shipping, which you can purchase at The UPS Store, and wrap each item in bubble cushioning surrounded by at least two (2) inches of packaging peanuts. Avoid having any air pockets or open space where the items can move around inside the box (tight is right!).
• If you don’t want to pack the items yourself, let the certified packing experts at The UPS Store help you pack and ship your items so they arrive intact.
• Let the receiver know when to expect the package, so the package doesn’t sit outside for a long period of time. The UPS Store will give you a tracking number and a guaranteed arrival date for all UPS shipped packages.
