Representatives of Johnson Jacobson Wilcox CPAs attended a special assembly at Lowman Elementary School to honor the winner of the firm's 2013 Art Contest.
Chelsea Garcia of Kim Radocy’s fourth grade class was selected as the winner and received a basket of art supplies and had her winning artwork set on poster board to display. The school received $5,000 from Johnson Jacobson Wilcox CPAs which can be used to best meet the school’s greatest need. Garcia’s artwork will also be featured on the CPA firm’s Fourth of July card, which is sent to clients and friends of the firm.
Michelle Baird, staff accountant, presented the award to Garcia. “The winner that we chose has a lot to say with her drawing. It is something the firm feels very strongly about. We are proud to be Americans and she showed something incredible.”
Baird explained to the assembly that the firm believes that being an American means that no matter the differences, Americans are lucky to be living in a great country. The firm believed that Garcia’s drawing expressed unity and bright hope for the future.
“I am so thrilled,” said Salvatore Maranto, assistant principal of Lowman Elementary School. “The money the school receives helps the students and is really going to help benefit positive student behavior and hopefully academics as well.”
“I am very excited for her,” Radocy said, “Chelsea has always been a very enthusiastic student in art.”
The parents were notified in advance about the award their daughter was to receive and attended the assembly. Miguel Garcia, Chelsea Garcia’s father, said, “I am so proud of my daughter today.”
The CPA firm started this tradition in conjunction with its 10-year anniversary in 2005.
Mariana Lomeli, staff accountant for Johnson Jacobson Wilcox CPAs, organized the contest this year. "This annual art contest is one of our firm’s favorite community outreach activities,” Lomeli said. "We received about 150 entries this year and it is really inspirational to see what all of the kids are drawing."
