The Nevada High School Shakespeare Competition drew to a close this week at the Las Vegas Shakespeare Theatre. Evelyn Benitez, 16, and Daviyon Young, 17, both of Legacy HS, were cited for their performance of a scene from “Much Ado About Nothing”. Chelsea Arroyo, 13, of KO Knudson MS, took the citation for individual performance for her rendering of the Puck’s last speech from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.
“This has been a wonderful learning experience for these gifted young people,” says Dan Decker, director of the Las Vegas Shakespeare Company which hosts the event every year. It’s been a joy for us to have such great kids in the theatre and we are happy to sponsor this program so they can participate at no cost.”
“Being able to work with Dan and others has been an eye-opening experience as far as Shakespeare goes. I hope to be able to continue on with it and learn more,” says Evelyn Benitez.
“The School District partnership with the Las Vegas Shakespeare Company benefits young people all over southern Nevada in many ways. We are very proud of young scholars,” says Judy Myers of the Clark County School District.
“It’s really more of celebration of Shakespeare that a competition,” says Decker. “The teenaged participants attend lectures and are directed in the subtleties of Shakespeare by our staff. The students learn the significance of these great works and why they are more popular today than they were 400 years ago.”
The event will be held again next year in March/April. It is open to all Nevada students between the ages of 12 and 17. For information go to the Las Vegas Shakespeare Company’s website at www.LVShakes.org or call the theatre at 702-220-5872. The Theatre is located at 821 Las Vegas Blvd North in the Cultural Corridor downtown.
