California Academy of Family Physicians Names Henderson, NV Physician “2012 Hero of Family Medicine”

San Francisco – Family physician Eric Ramos, MD has been named the California Academy of Family Physicians (CAFP) 2012 Hero of Family Medicine. He received the award at the CAFP’s Congress of Delegates in Sacramento on March 4, and will be acknowledged on April 21 at a ceremony at the CAFP Annual Scientific Assembly in Indian Wells, CA.

Dr. Ramos, named this year as chief medical officer for the Far West Division of Hospital Corporation of America, practiced until recently in Modesto, CA. As a strong advocate for improving quality of care and adopting the patient-centered medical home model of care delivery, he was highly respected among his colleagues statewide and beloved by his patients.

“CAFP presents this annual award to honor a family physician who has represented our specialty, our profession and our patients so strongly that we bestow the title ‘hero,’” said CAFP President Steve A. Green. “Dr. Ramos is a hero of family medicine for many reasons, but his political activism and generosity come most quickly to mind.”

Dr. Ramos was a founding board member of the CAFP Family Physicians Political Action Committee (FP-PAC) in 2004 and, with wife Judy Ramos, has been a generous contributor. They are generous contributors to the CAFP Foundation as well. Both the PAC and Foundation support family physicians’ work on behalf of their patients. He also is a CAFP past president.

Two key focuses of family medicine are prevention and expert management of chronic conditions. While in office-based practice, Dr. Ramos and his team successfully completed CAFP Diabetes and Smoking Cessation projects and have shared their expertise and encouragement at numerous CAFP Annual Scientific Assemblies. Dr. Ramos also developed an obesity prevention program that engaged the entire community in Patterson, CA, while he served as medical director for Del Puerto Health Center.

“Dr. Ramos was named CAFP Family Physician of the Year in 2011,” Dr. Green said. “CAFP is pleased to acknowledge his continuing contributions and accomplishments with this year’s Hero Award.”
