STUDENTS VISIT REGIONAL JUSTICE CENTER ON LAW DAY – MAY 1, 2012
LAS VEGAS (April 30, 2012) − Each year, the President of the United States declares May 1st as Law Day to recognize the rights and benefits bestowed upon all citizens through the U.S. Constitution.
In observance of Law Day 2012, 70 high school students from Veteran's Tribute Career and Technical Academy will experience first-hand the judicial system as they visit the Clark County Regional Justice Center, sit in on actual trials and court procedures from jury selection to sentencing, and meet judges and court staff.
The tour was organized by Project REAL, a non-profit organization that introduces school Nevada students to the importance of the law and prepares them to become involved, participating citizens who understand their social responsibilities and rights. Project REAL provides tours – at no cost - to more than 48,000 school children throughout the year.
“Teaching school children the ideals of equality and justice under law and cultivating respect for the law is vital to the democratic way of life,” say Jane Jensen Saint, executive director of Project REAL, which offers a variety of programs that give students of all ages the opportunity to explore our judicial system, examine current controversial issues and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Project REAL programs fully comply with state and county educational standards and all programs are provided to the students, teachers and schools at no cost.
“School children often misunderstand the complexity of the judiciary or the scholarly application of the law. Field trips like these allow children to discover the working process of the judiciary and helps them better understand Nevada’s limited jurisdiction courts, the state trial court system, and the federal trial court system,” adds Saint.
Participants will meet with judges and have the opportunity to ask questions about their jobs, the types of civil and criminal case filings and the trends affecting the judiciary. In addition, the tours provide the courts with an opportunity to showcase its beneficial programs and allows the public a chance to learn more about the judicial branch of our government.
The Tuesday, May 1st Law Day 2012 tour of the Clark County Regional Justice Center at 200 Lewis Avenue will begin at 9:30 a.m. For more information about this program, contact Project REAL at (702) 388-7527.
