THE UT.LAB and Crowdtilt team up to change the way footwear is brought to market

In August, the Las Vegas and Shanghai based Unbelievable Testing Laboratory lead the most successful footwear Kickstarter to date, raising 947% of its funding goal. Now, THE UT.LAB is further changing the way footwear is brought to market globally by partnering with Crowdtilt, a San Francisco crowdfunding platform and Y-Combinator company. THE UT.LAB launched its new Light Wing series in cooperation with Crowdtilt on November 12th, with the limited ten-day campaign ending on November 22nd.
“The art of footwear demand forecasting is an age-old practice that we want to spin on its head. Instead of guessing what the market needs, we are going to let our fans tell us what they want,” says co-founder Joseph Constanty.
Building on the success of Kickstarter, THE UT.LAB and Crowdtilt have created a limited-time demand channel to take pre-sale orders for the Light Wing series. Shoes are available in five new colors (red, blue, gray, black, and white), and can be purchased at shop.theutlab.com.
Having learned from their Kickstarter production challenges, THE UT.LAB has put standards in place that guarantee all shoes will be shipped by December 14th, assuring a holiday delivery.
“We have industry buyers following us very closely, looking to make purchase orders based on the pre-sale demand. We are using this Crowdtilt activity as a litmus test for our retail buyers to forecast 2014 sales,” says co-founder Shaun Nath.
THE UT.LAB believes in validating all products before it moves forward with full-scale production, letting customer data speak for itself. Not only does this unique pre-sales activity change demand planning and reduce material and investment wastage, it also allows the team to focus on its larger mission of making science cool again. Raising over $142,000 in 27 days and donating $5,032 to their partner Teach for America in the Las Vegas Valley, THE UT.LAB is a technology-driven footwear company that believes shoes can help change education across the globe. The 2,013 pair limited edition release of its Light Wing Pencil was two-times oversubscribed with customers from 57 countries backing the project.
