“Self-Publishing is Easy,” says Local Youth Children’s Book Author

Interested in publishing that book of yours? Youth James Messina, Henderson local and graduate of Coronado High School, has done just that. He started writing and illustrating his own children’s picture books in January of this year. At lightning speed, James has produced five children’s books to date, with another coming soon – the sequel to his first book, Ana Banana Peel.

He calls himself Marker Kid Children’s Books, whose website, www.markerkid.com, and facebook page are complete with exciting videos, free coloring pages, and links to buy the books.

He reports using Create Space, a segment of Amazon that acts as a printer only. For a minimal initial investment, therefore, James says that your book can be submitted and beautifully printed without having to deal with expensive, scamming self-publishing companies or the traditional publishing slog.

“Many authors are scared of publishing and printing on their own because of the difficulties of self-marketing,” says the young entrepreneur, “but it’s not that difficult once you get started.” James markets through word of mouth, business cards, a Facebook page, website, and book readings. In fact, in the last two weeks, James has done his first two school readings at Bartlett and John C. Bass elementary schools. “They were so much fun to do and the kids loved it,” says James. He showed the excited children his videos, read them a few of the books, discussed the writing and illustrating process, passed out his original coloring pages, and sent home flyers for parents to buy the books, with part of the profits being donated back to the schools.

“The most important thing,” says James, “is to never give up. I became discouraged when I heard how long and almost impossible traditional publishing can be and how expensive self-publishing can be. Of course the process takes diligent work and patience, but it can be much simpler and cheaper than they say, and still be successful. So still have a great book that needs to be published? I believe you can do it. You should too.”
