The rise in gas prices has slowed, but the busy summer travel season is approaching, which usually means higher prices as a gallon of gas nears $4.
AAA reported today the average price for gas in the Silver State is $3.94 per gallon, 7 cents above the price a month ago and 94 cents more than a year ago.
Nevada’s average price is 1 cent below the national average of $3.95, according to AAA’s monthly fuel price report. The national average hasn't been this high since July 2008, the auto club said.
Prices in Southern Nevada are lower than other parts of the state. The average price in Las Vegas is $3.88, a 5-cent increase from a month ago. North Las Vegas and Henderson both had 6-cent increases, to $3.89 in North Las Vegas and $3.91 in Henderson.
Demand for gas has remained steady in the last two weeks, AAA spokesman Matt Skryja said.
“After hitting a plateau of sorts for several days last week, prices at the pump have dipped slightly,” Skryja said in a statement. “It’s tough to say how long this dip will last, given that the lower oil prices of last week have now rebounded a bit. Motorists need to keep in mind that we are just a couple of weeks away from the Memorial Day weekend. This holiday is typically considered the start of the summer driving season, when prices are traditionally higher.”
Reno’s average price is $4.07, a 10-cent increase from a month ago, while Carson City’s average is $4.03. Sparks has the highest average in the state at $4.09. Elko’s average is $3.93.
Nevada has the 11th highest average price among the lower 48 states.
