Describe your business.
We are a dog lifestyle company that emphasizes a happier and healthier life for dogs.
How’d you come up with the idea for a dog treadmill?
My business partner was looking for a way to exercise his very energetic dog. He owned a gym at the time and thought it would make sense for his dog to run on a treadmill to be healthier and build endurance. We built a prototype together.
What was the initial reaction?
Most people laugh and say, “My dog would never do that,” or my favorite, “I walk my dog.” A walk is not enough exercise for most dogs, and nearly every dog I have ever encountered is easily trained and loves to run on the Dog Pacer. Our treadmills are great for dogs who live in small spaces, those who live in areas affected by cold or severe weather and working dogs, such as police or service dogs.
You also make a dog bed. What sets it apart?
The Sealy Dog Bed is an advanced sleeping system for pets. Dogs sleep a majority of the hours in the day, and they need a good bed to help support their joints and skeletal system, just like people do.
How much do the items cost?
Treadmill ranges from $479 to $499. Dog beds cost $99 to $169.99. There are three sizes.
Where do you see the pet industry headed?
It is a recession-proof industry that is growing by $2 billion per year and will continue to keep growing as pets and their needs become more popular. We are aware of the widening demographics and habits of buyers.
Who are your customers?
Everybody who owns a dog and cares about furry friends. We have sent treadmills to low-income areas where it is apparent that the owner is sacrificing to make sure that “Fido” has a wonderful life. We also have customers who are very wealthy who want only the best for their dogs.
What is your business philosophy?
Anything is possible with time, effort and ambition.
What’s the most important part of your job?
Making sure that all of the pieces and people in our company are working together smoothly. Our customers see the fruits of our efforts in the shape of products that make their animals happier. What they don’t see is the amount of time, effort and skill it takes to make sure everyone is doing their part to make that one, single product.
What is the hardest part about doing business in Las Vegas?
The casino industry is the largest factor in our economy. It is difficult to get well-qualified people to work for a startup company and put in the time and energy necessary when they can make the same money or more being a valet or serving alcohol at a nightclub.
What is the best part about doing business in Las Vegas?
The tax benefits, affordable rent, a nearby and uncrowded airport, and lots of conventions.
