Organizers of Las Vegas retail market show not buckling to coronavirus pressure

A trade show expected to bring 40,000 attendees to the Las Vegas Convention Center this month will go on as scheduled despite concerns about the coronavirus.

ASD Market Week 2020, which will take place March 22-25, will go off mostly as planned. A number of show attendees from — or associated with — Chinese organizations won’t be attending due to recent U.S. government-imposed travel restrictions. The coronavirus, which has infected 94,000 worldwide, originated in China.

“Exhibiting companies from mainland China represent only 5% of the resources available to (attendees),” organizers said in the release. “We are monitoring the situation daily and following all safety information and precautions set forth by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, and other federal, state and local governmental agencies.”

The massive retail merchandise show is expected to feature more than a million product lines.

Next to the CONEXPO-CON/AGG construction show, ASD Market Week is the largest convention on the calendar this month in Las Vegas. Sandra Mason, a spokeswoman for the CONEXPO-CONN/AGG show, which takes place every three years, said more than 4,000 new attendee registrations have been received since Friday — even with the coronavirus worries.

“We are pacing ahead of 2017,” Mason said in an email Wednesday.

On Monday, organizers of the Adobe Summit conference, which was set to have about 20,000 attendees at the Venetian from March 29-April 2, said the event will be online-only.
