The Top Tech Awards is an annual event that celebrates innovation and excellence in Southern Nevada’s technology sector. Joy Hoover, chief executive officer for Esōes Cosmetics, won the Top Tech of the Year Award in 2024 for fusing beauty and technology to create patented smart lipsticks designed to enhance personal safety for women. The discreet yet high-tech cosmetic case connects to a mobile app and can alert loved ones or authorities in emergencies. In an interview with VEGAS INC, Hoover reflected on the impact of her win and the Top Tech Awards’ importance to the community.
What is it like to win a Top Tech Award?
It’s an incredible honor. Being recognized doesn’t just validate the years of grit, grief and innovation behind Esōes—it validates why we build. It shines a light on what’s possible when tech is rooted in humanity, not just profitability. This award means the world, not just to me, but to every survivor I’ve created for. Because when safety becomes standard, survival becomes power. And that’s the kind of tech future we all deserve.
Why do you think it’s important to have a technology recognition awards program in Las Vegas?
Las Vegas is more than entertainment and hospitality; we’re a city of creators, disruptors and bold innovators. Recognizing tech innovation here elevates our entire ecosystem and spotlights the brilliant minds transforming safety, healthcare, education, sustainability and more.
How do you see technology evolving in the next five years?
I see a massive shift toward tech that doesn’t just entertain or simplify — it safeguards, empowers and equips. The intersection of AI, wearable tech and personal safety will unlock life-saving possibilities. The future isn’t just smart. It’s safe, inclusive and radically human.
What advice would you give aspiring innovators looking to make an impact on the tech industry?
Create what you wish existed. Solve the problem that keeps you up at night. And whatever you do, don’t wait for permission. You don’t need a traditional tech background to disrupt an industry. You need vision, resilience and community. Let your gut guide you. Because tech built from truth? It doesn’t just disrupt, it redefines the rules.
Who are your technology superheroes?
Megan Lancaster, founder of Ellavate Wagon. She looked at the chaos of gear-hauling, kid-wrangling family outings and built the world’s first electric everyday wagon. Also, Kristina Jones, founder of Guardian Lane. She lost her dad as a kid and built what she wished she had—an on-demand grief support platform for children, filled with creative projects and real guidance. She turned heartbreak into healing. That’s legacy tech. These women don’t just innovate. They lead with heart, build with fire and never forget who it’s for.
