Las Vegas' richest man, Sheldon Adelson, fell 12 spots on Forbes’ 400 Richest Americans list, but he's still got about $15 billion to fall back on.

Keeping up with the new Cannery

Gamblers play roulette during the grand opening of the Eastside Cannery on Boulder Highway. Nearby competitors Sam's Town and Boulder Station pumped tens of millions of dollars into renovations and improvements before the opening. "This is part of remaining competitive," a spokesman for Sam's Town's parent company said.

When the Eastside Cannery opened last month on Boulder Highway, you could almost see the sweat breaking out on the well-worn surfaces of nearby Boulder Station and Sam’s Town.

Strip clubs shouldn’t expect looser slot rules

Strip clubs are, in the eyes of Nevada gaming regulators, not like restaurants, convenience markets or grocery stores.

Cannery partners did it their way

Cannery Resorts partners Bill Wortman, left, and Bill Paulos attend the Aug. 27 grand opening of the $250 million Eastside Cannery at Boulder Highway and Harmon Avenue. Their company, which they've agreed to sell for $1.8 billion, also manages the Rampart and owns a lucrative "racino" in the Pittsburgh area.

In an industry driven by outsized egos, an equal partnership is a rare and wondrous thing.

Visitor numbers see largest fall since 2003

Las Vegas in July experienced its largest monthly decline in visitor traffic since the start of the Iraq war in March 2003, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported today.

Casino winnings fall for seventh straight month

CARSON CITY – For the seventh straight month, casino winnings on the Strip slumped, falling 14.6 percent in July from the year before.

Riviera claws at every expense

Clockwise from top left: Conventioneers at the Riviera have a light meal at a new snack bar, which replaced temporary food tables the hotel used to use for serving conventions. Riviera customer service representative Hal Doyle chats with Lisa Hopkins of Spavinaw, Okla., after she hit a big jackpot on a slot machine. Lloyd Wentzell, the Riviera's food and beverage vice president, shows the Quick Cuisine machines used to make sauces and other food for the hotel's restaurants. Self-service kiosks let hotel guests check in and out quickly. Kiosks are among the cost-cutting moves the aging Strip property is employing during the downturn.

When times are flush, managers think big: Budgets balloon, plans take shape and perks flow. When times are tough, as they are now for casinos on the Strip, they’re thinking small, combing budgets, reviewing expenses and trimming where they can.

Competitors, downturn dog slots leader

If the slot machine business were like the film industry, the biggest studio with the greatest collective experience and longest string of blockbusters would be International Game Technology.

Buyout keeps Cosmopolitan in play

M Resort to hire close to 2,000

The M Resort, under construction at the southeast corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and St. Rose Parkway, today kicked off a campaign to hire close to 2,000 employees for the property.

Adios, pesky state ban on cellular calls

Last month’s vote by the Nevada Gaming Commission to permanently repeal a long-standing ban on the use of cell phones and other electronic communications devices in sports books couldn’t have come soon enough for Nevada casinos, which began removing those ubiquitous, misunderstood and often overlooked signs in sports books requesting that customers make calls elsewhere.

Web poker banned, they play politics

Actor Ben Affleck talks with Bill Lawson, vice president of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, the group that benefited from the charity poker tournament at Coors Field organized by the Poker Players Alliance on Aug. 28, 2008. Affleck will be among A-list stars playing Thursday, July 2, 2009, at the Ante up for Africa charity poker event at the Rio in Las Vegas.

Not long after Congress passed a ban on Internet gambling, PR man John Pappas knew he had to be here at the Democratic National Convention.

Low cost is Eastside Cannery’s major innovation

The Eastside Cannery, built as a slightly higher-end property than its sister casino in North Las Vegas, occupies a part of the suburban valley that is already home to a host of casinos. It's within three miles of Boulder Station, Arizona Charlie's and Sam's Town, but it's expected to benefit from being the new kid on the Boulder Strip.

When the Eastside Cannery opens for business this evening, customers may notice a few vintage touches. The industry elite, however, will be focusing on the property’s price tag.

Court rules in favor of Vegas unions

CARSON CITY – The Culinary and bartenders unions have won another round in their long legal battle with the former owners of the Sahara and Hacienda hotel-casinos in Las Vegas.

New blood helped Tropicana, union heal old wounds

No one would describe a relationship between unions and management as amorous, but on the Strip there’s at least an understanding, an industry standard that is mostly obliged.
