Nevada retakes dubious position as national foreclosure leader

Nevada is back on top — but no one will celebrate this No. 1 ranking. The Silver State had the highest foreclosure rate in the country in March, with one in every 306 housing units receiving a foreclosure-related filing, according to a new report from RealtyTrac.

Las Vegas home prices up again in March; median now $161,000

Home prices in the Las Vegas area are up 7.3 percent from a month ago and nearly 31 percent from last year as supply stays short. The median price for a single-family home sold in March was $161,000, up from $150,000 in February.

One of Southern Nevada’s largest shopping centers — the Galleria at Sunset mall in Henderson — is set to undergo a $7 million renovation, its first since it opened in 1996. Construction is scheduled to begin this month and is slated for completion in the fall. Nevadans who expect to lose their homes to foreclosure move out far more frequently than struggling borrowers in other states. Nevada has a “zombie foreclosure” rate of 50 percent, meaning half of all homes in the foreclosure process that aren't yet bank-owned are empty.
