New events center coming to Las Vegas Strip

The Las Vegas Strip, home to themed casinos that mimic the canals of Venice and the skyscrapers of Manhattan, is getting a new events center modeled on an Eastern European glass factory. The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas is developing a 3,000-capacity theater that has sat empty since the hotel-casino opened in 2010. The auditorium is expected to open by the end of the year and cater to conventioneers, boxing fans and concertgoers.

The Mandarin Oriental and Four Seasons were named the top hotels and the Cosmopolitan ranked as the best casino hotel in Nevada, according to readers of Travel & Leisure magazine. Those were Las Vegas' highest-rated entries "500 World's Best Hotels" list released this month.

A healthy jump in convention traffic boosted visitation in November and gave hope that Las Vegas can still break the elusive barrier of 40 million tourists for 2012. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority said today that 3.1 million people visited Southern Nevada in November, bringing the 11-month total to 36.7 million. But December totals are traditionally weak, despite the annual arrival of the National Finals Rodeo. The LVCVA said visitor volume inched up by 2.5 percent for the month, thanks to a 16.7 percent increase in the number of conventioneers attending shows in the city.

Passenger traffic at McCarran International Airport dropped slightly for the third month in a row in November, according to statistics released Friday. Traffic dropped 0.3 percent in November compared to the same month last year, with a total of 3.31 million travelers arriving or departing.

Workers never know what they’re going to find at the bottom of the bay at Treasure Island. Shopping carts, baby strollers, even a heavy concrete trash receptacle are among the items found when workers drain the 1.5 million gallon Siren’s Cove for its annual maintenance. Since Dec. 3, the bay where "The Sirens of TI" plays nightly has been empty for painting and repairs.
