When an investor as good as Mr. Kerkorian gets burned, that doesn't say much for the rest of us small timers who are constantly getting "can't miss" offers to invest. While my numbers are less than KK's, (way way less) I get the occasional "opportunity" offered my way. My investing consists of buying stocks in my retirement plan 100 or 200 shares here and there. Some I.ve held for over 10 years (including a dog or 2), others I sold after a runup in a month or 2. He should have sold when it got to 24 a share amd made 150 mil. Then again, him throwing that much on the market would have had the same effect it ended up with anyway. I'm still smarting over a $700 loss on a stock I had a few years back (it still MIGHT recover?), can't imagine what it's like with real big money.
Like anything else, it's supply vs. demand. If the planes are flying full (or very close to full), it isn't overpriced. If they are half full, it is overpriced. I personally think the cost to see Garth at the Wynn is prohibitive. But they sell out every show, so it is not overpriced. While it may be above what I would be willing to pay, obviously there are enough people willing to pay the high price. Same goes for airlines, hotel rooms, etc. If the market allows it, charge accordingly. Unfortunately, the real truth is that the money lost on the highly competetive routes has to be made up on the lesser routes. I live in Bakersfield, California. For decades the Bakersfield routes have been so expensive that a lot of people drive to Los Angeles or Fresno to catch their flight. I have many times myself.
If he is selling plastic swords, he should have a state resale license and collect sales taxes on such. (that's how every "legitimate" business does it). Also, any idea how much of the "income" is declared and taxed with the IRS? I'd guess very little. What about the constitutional rights of the tax paying citizens who patronize the licensed businesses along the strip (casinos, hotels, stores, restaurants, etc.). Don't we have the right to walk those sidewalks without being harrassed by these unlicensed "actors"? In my mind the county (or city if downtown) should issue licenses (for a fee) that allows these people to operate just as every other business is required to do. The holders of such licenses would be required to operate within the rules set forth. Those unable to produce their proper identity and license should be subject to fine. Also the public should refrain from handing over any money to these people for a trinket ot photo op.
First, when I visit Las Vegas, it is not to eat the same fast food I can get back home. Too many good places to eat in Las Vegas (mostly off of the strip). No need for a big mac or subway for me.
Those comments by others about the cost of rent, etc. being higher on the strip are very true. Same for airports. Ever eaten at a fast food franchise inside a major league stadium? Very expensive, as is the rent. The Walgreens is a little pricier for a 20 oz soda, but much better than what the machines in the hotels charge.
I always bring my car. When it's time to eat, we drive wherever we have to in Las Vegas for a great lunch or dinner. Less crowded too!
I love the strip, but I enjoy the variety of the good local restaurants you have in Las Vegas.
If there was an In-n-out on the strip, it would be a gold mine.
B.B. King's is a great restaurant, great food, great music and excellent employees and service. Also their menu prices are reasonable (not cheap, but honest and fair for the obviously high cost of operating). We,ve never had a bad experience there. I hope they get it sorted out and continue to operate. (no, I do not have any connection to the restaurant, other than as a customer).
Above positive comments also apply to Toby Keith's, aacross the street at Harrah's.
I never use prepaid cards or debit cards (other than a rebate card from a cell phone company, or if I get one as a gift). I just cannot see paying a fee to spend my own money. I pay my bills online or by check, even pay one utility with good ol' cash since it's right up the street from my house. I understand the need for banks to charge a monthly service fee, there is a cost of doing business, but I'll keep paying the old fashioned way to avoid those fees. I also understand that those without credit or a bank account have few options, so a prepaid card is viable. I 'm just amazed how many people pay everything with a debit card, even if so many have a fee for each transaction.
Dennis, your politics and mine may be very different and we have had some good debates on this site, but I'm with you on this one!
If I was reaching a credit limit on a credit card or account (or any credit account), I would stop using the card before it reached the limit. I wouldn't even need to be told I was over the limit. I deal in amounts way way below the $250,000 this guy had in his "self imposed limit", but really, he had to know he had exceeded that "limit" long before it was 5 times that number.
Another Watanabe wannabe out there.
To each his own, but I'll keep my "self expression" to the printed t- shirts I wear, The car I drive and any bumper sticker that might be on it, etc. If I change my mind, it's easy to change a shirt or take a sticker off of the car. I think an otherwise good looking girl with a tattoo (or 10) suddenly loses her "attraction". Obviously some don't agree, but I'll stick to my un-tattoed way of life.
And the government keeps saying "the recession is over"....yeah....right.
Shame on any church for using "strategic default". What ever happened to teaching right from wrong?
If one cannot make the payments on what they have, does it make sence to build an even bigger building. Very irresponsible if you ask me.
The bank should foreclose, and take the "reserve" as well. Then lease it back at current market rates.
