Las Vegas IT certificate program partners with Innevation Center, Michigan initiative

A Las Vegas organization that provides certificate training for perspective IT professionals announced partnerships with data company Switch’s Innevation Center and the Michigan Cyber Initiative, that state’s public-private collaboration to bolster its security sector.

The president of the Las Vegas organization, formerly known as the Learning Center, also announced a new name as it rebrands to expand its teaching to classrooms in Michigan and online classrooms.

The Cyber World Institute will serve as the new name for the Learning Center, its president, Linda Montgomery, announced at an event today at the Innevation Center at Switch’s campus.

With the new partnerships, the Cyber World Institute will provide instruction in six Michigan classrooms, in addition to the eight classrooms it operates in Las Vegas.

According to its website, the center provide certificate training in a number of areas, including cloud computing, Microsoft and Cisco software, visualization and (ISC)​2, which issues recognized cybersecurity certificates.

(ISC)​2 CEO David Shearer, who spoke at today’s event via videoconference, said there is a high demand for IT talent. He applauded partnerships like those the center forged with the Innevation Center and the Michigan initiative, emphasizing the need for a collaboration in cybersecurity.

“No one organization is going to be able to (provide security) on its own,” he said.

The center’s collaboration with the Michigan Cyber Initiative will take several forms.

The Cyber World Institute will teach classes in Michigan, Montgomery said. It will also work with Merit Network, a nonprofit Michigan computing organization, to gain access to a virtual training range to better understand threats and information systems as they exist in a real-life situation.

Montgomery said Michigan is a leader in cybersecurity, but she hopes the partnership will give Nevada an edge.

“We are going to bring the Michigan Cyber Initiative to Nevada,” she said. “That is the goal.”
