NEW YORK — Stocks skidded Thursday as a late drop erased the market's gains from the day before. Companies that sell oil, gold and silver tumbled along with the prices of those commodities.
On Thursday:
The Dow Jones industrial average sank 253.25 points, or 1.4 percent, to 17,495.84.
The Standard & Poor's 500 lost 31.18 points, or 1.5 percent, to 2,041.89.
The Nasdaq composite index gave up 68.58 points, or 1.4 percent, to 5,002.55.
For the week:
The Dow has gained 230.63 points, or 1.3 percent.
The S&P has added 29.52 points, or 1.5 percent.
The Nasdaq has risen 69.09 points, or 1.4 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 327.23 points, or 1.8 percent.
The S&P is down 17.01 points, or 0.8 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 266.50 points, or 5.6 percent.
