The Notes: Philanthropy, Sept. 7-13

The Penta Building Group raised $120,000 for local nonprofit organizations during its 10th annual Charity Golf Classic at the Revere Golf Club in Henderson. Money was raised to support the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, the Women’s Development Center and the Wounded Warrior Project. Penta has raised nearly $1 million for local nonprofits through the tournament.

Local Brighton Collectible stores sponsored their fourth-annual handbag trade-in program to benefit Dress for Success Southern Nevada. Customers who donated a handbag received $25 to $50 off a new Brighton bag.

Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada received $30,000 from the Robert S. and Dorothy J. Keyser Foundation. Half of the grant will pay for equipment at the Paradise Park clinic; the rest will support general operating costs.

Five Clark County students with Norwegian ancestry were awarded $3,100 in scholarships by the Vegas Viking Lodge of the Sons of Norway. Winners were chosen based on grade-point averages, essays on their Norwegian roots, extracurricular activities and financial need. They were: Sean Cortney, Amanda Fehr, Skylar Feldman, Nathan Gifford and Jessica Reed (who received the Vegas Viking Scholarship for the third time.)

The National Association of Federal Credit Unions partnered with Operation Homefront to assemble 225 backpacks for United States service members and their families in need of school supplies. Dovenmuehle, Genworth Mortgage Insurance, Money Concepts and Élan Financial Services sponsored the backpacks. Operation Homefront provides emergency financial and other assistance to the families of service members and wounded warriors.

Employees of Bally Technologies spent time with children suffering from cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. The visit was part of Bally’s partnership with the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation and marks the company’s second annual trip to the camp.

Sands Cares, a social responsibility initiative of Las Vegas Sands Corp., the Venetian, Palazzo and Sands Expo, donated $3,645 to Shade Tree on behalf of employees. Sands offered workers tickets to a Las Vegas 51s baseball game with all proceeds going to Shade Tree. The donation was matched by a Sands Cares donation of $10,000. In addition, the Venetian and Palazzo donated 16 cases of toiletries.

Coins tossed into the fountain at Miracle Mile Shops in Planet Hollywood were donated to Communities in Schools of Nevada.

The Junior League of Las Vegas received a $7,500 contribution from NV Energy to help pay for grants for Clark County teachers.

Best Buddies Nevada, a nonprofit group that works with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, moved to 2980 S. Jones Blvd., Suite C, Las Vegas.

The Engelstad Family Foundation awarded a five-year grant worth $1.8 million to Spread the Word Nevada’s “Every Child Reads” project. The grant will fund the expansion of Spread the Word’s literacy programs to 30 more schools.

The Epicurean Charitable Foundation of Las Vegas and Avero LLC sponsored a 2014 Avero New York City Restaurant Education Experience for Art Institute of Las Vegas student Wendy Pimentel.

Right Now Air, a heating and air conditioning company, donated $8,520 to the Little Miss Hannah Foundation, a charity that helps children with life-limiting rare diseases.

The Silverton is collecting donations for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada. The resort placed drop boxes around its casino floor that patrons can use to donate unclaimed or unwanted slot vouchers.

Michelle Chatingny, Jennifer Martinez and Ondra Berry joined the board of the directors of the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada.

Kohl’s Department Store donated $8,000 to Child Focus, a program of St. Jude’s Ranch for Children.

Francisco Chavez, Kelsie Leas and Kaley Sproul each received a $1,000 Continuing Education Scholarship from the Nevada Heritage Foundation.

Stacy Watkins is chairman of the board of directors for Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada. Watkins is senior vice president and regional manager at Nevada State Bank.

Supportive Services for Veteran Families received $2.6 million in homelessness-prevention grants to serve about 640 homeless and at-risk veteran families.

The Animal Foundation’s Be a Hero Week helped find homes for 298 dogs, including 180 at-risk pit bulls and Chihuahuas.

Kris Engelstad McGarry and the Engelstad Family Foundation, Clint Holmes and Dorothy Eisenberg will be honored at the Public Education Foundation’s 18th annual Education Hero Award Dinner on Sept. 20 at Mandarin Oriental.

City National Bank donated almost 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to 30 elementary schools and one nonprofit group in Nevada, California, New York, Georgia and Tennessee.

Big Brothers Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada, Soles4Souls and FN Platform donated new shoes to more than 300 children and teens during the MAGIC convention.

Bank of America donated $5,000 to the Trauma Intervention Program of Southern Nevada.

Blvd. Cocktail Company at the Linq hosted Cocktails for a Cause to raise money for the March of Dimes.

The CASA Foundation partnered with Square Salon to offer foster children a free shampoo, haircut and blow dry, along with a manicure and backpack filled with school supplies.

Yumz Gourmet Frozen Yogurt donated 10 percent of sales Aug. 19 to Ronald McDonald House of Greater Las Vegas, which provides temporary housing for families who travel to Las Vegas to receive medical treatment for their children.

Communities in Schools of Nevada co-hosted a Fill the Bus event. The Nevada affiliate of the dropout prevention program collected school supplies and uniforms for 44,000 students in need. Partners included the Cosmopolitan, Allegiant Air, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, DR Horton, Belfor Property Restorations, Global Experience Specialists, Todd English P.U.B., Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors, Pacific Coast Dental, Pugsley, Simpson & Coulter Architects, Gilman & Londot CPAs and Midcountry Bank.

Longtime UNLV supporter Kitty Rodman, Las Vegas Sands and its chairman, Sheldon Adelson, will be honored at the 2014 UNLV Foundation annual dinner Oct. 13 at Bellagio. Las Vegas Sands committed $7 million toward construction of a new hotel college academic building and a proposed Center for Professional and Leadership Studies. Rodman support numerous UNLV programs.

Treasure Island employees collected school supplies for students at Lomie Gray Heard Elementary School, the county’s public school on Nellis Air Force Base. The majority of the students have at least one parent enlisted in the military.
