What is your hobby/sport?

I’ve enjoyed basketball since childhood. I also played in college. I meet with some friends and practice twice weekly. Basketball is excellent for weight control. It burns a tremendous amount of calories, provides a superb aerobic workout and also uses many different muscle groups.

What tips do you have when you’ve “hit the wall” and need motivation to continue?

Finding a partner can help get you motivated. I carpool with a lawyer friend (at 5:45 a.m.), and it makes it so we can’t miss due to the fact we are expected to be there for one another.

What products or gear are essential?

All you need for this sport is a basketball and a hoop. In my case, ankle braces are a good addition too, as I’ve sprained my ankles many times over the years.

What’s the best diet/nutrition advice you ever received?

It’s not what you eat, it’s how much you eat. A registered dietician I worked with once told her class to carry a 5-pound bag of sugar on their stomachs during a nutrition walk through Smith’s. It didn’t take long for many to want to put it down, and when they did, it solidified the importance of losing any weight. Even losing 5 pounds made them feel so much lighter.

What’s your guilty-pleasure food?

I love peanut M&M’s. I try not to buy them, but if I see them in a bowl, they will be gone.

What did you eat for breakfast today?

Fruit smoothie.
