Law firm hits back against Las Vegas company

An international law firm is firing back at Verano Land Group LP, a Las Vegas firm that invested some $65 million in a San Antonio real estate development involving Texas A&M University.

It was reported last week that Verano had sued its former managers, prominent law firm Fulbright & Jaworski LLP and a San Antonio partner in that law firm, Jane Macon.

Verano claimed it had been damaged by alleged misconduct and self-dealing by the former managers and the law firm.

The San Antonio Express-News reported Fulbright & Jaworski is denying wrongdoing and that it responded on Monday with a lawsuit of its own, claiming Verano Land Group has failed to pay more than $521,000 in legal fees.

The suit was filed in San Antonio’s Bexar County District Court.

“These businessmen should not think they can come to Texas, obtain help in establishing a highly successful development and then run back to Nevada and refuse to fully pay the people who made their project a success,” said George Scofield, partner in charge of Fulbright & Jaworski's San Antonio office, according to the Express-News.

Verano has not yet responded to the Texas suit and its Las Vegas-based attorneys have declined comment on the litigation.
